The pleached tree is renowned worldwide, with its heritage rooted in the Renaissance gardens of Italy, dating back as far as the 17th century. Italy remains the true home of the pleached tree, and at Sutton Manor our specimens are hand‑selected from specialist pleached tree nurseries across Tuscany.
Italian pleached frames are unmatched in quality. They are crafted from durable, darker hardwood rather than cheap bamboo, giving them a refined, elegant aesthetic when planted in your garden. Our trees are always supplied in their nursery pots—never root‑balled—as this ensures a stronger, healthier root system for successful replanting.
When comparing like‑for‑like girth sizes, Sutton Manor’s Italian pleached trees consistently appear fuller, more balanced, and more expertly trained than those produced using inferior bamboo frames.
How to plant them?
Dig a hole the same depth as the root ball but slightly wider. If your soil drains well, you can dig a little deeper and backfill to improve stability. Loosen the soil at the base and sides of the hole to help the roots spread, and remove any large debris. Enrich the planting hole with a suitable feed.
Position your stakes first—installing them afterward can damage the roots. Once the tree is planted, firm the soil gently to remove air pockets. Apply mulch around the base to help retain moisture and suppress weeds. Finish by feeding the tree after planting to support strong establishment.
Planting Ideas
- Underplanting Options – Enhance the space beneath the clear stem with low, evergreen structure such as Hebe, Lavender, or neatly clipped Box balls. For added seasonal interest, introduce bulbs, hardy geraniums, or ornamental grasses to bring colour and movement throughout the year.
- Patio Borders – Create a stunning natural frame around your terrace or seating area with a row of pleached Red Robin. They form a beautiful living wall that delivers privacy, structure, and a softer, more organic feel than hard landscaping alone.
- Driveway & Entrance Framing – Pleached trees create an impressive sense of arrival when used in pairs or planted in a row. They bring formal structure, height, and year‑round colour to the approach of your home, instantly elevating curb appeal.
- Garden Screening – Plant along fences or boundaries to instantly increase the height and privacy of your garden. The 120 × 120 cm pleached frame sits neatly above fence level, providing excellent additional screening and a beautifully finished look
